CEROC is an easy to learn, fun mix, of modern jive and latin – with a bit of ballroom thrown in. It’s great exercise and no previous dance experience is required.CEROC was created in London by two Brothers who had been living in France, where Swing/Rock and Roll dancing had not been affected by the onslaught of Disco. The name CEROC is an abbreviation of the French C’est le Roc (It’s Rock). The two Brothers hired Porchester Hall in 1980, put up posters and around 80 people turned up. Within 3 months the numbers had grown to 700. In the mid-late 1980’s was highlighted by the film Dirty Dancing, then again more recently, in the BBC series, Strictly Come Dancing and Strictly Dance Fever, which proved a great hit with young & old alike. There are now hundreds of venues in the UK.
CEROC has been around in the Mojacar area for approx 3 years – taught by UK trained dancers Tracey & Paul of Dance-Fusion. They have been teaching 8 years.
Due to the format of the class, new people can start at any time, as the Beginner moves are taught in rotation during the 40 minute Beginners lesson at the start of the evening. All Beginnner moves will have been covered within 6-8 weeks. After the Beginners class there is a freestyle session, followed by a short Intermediate class for those people who’ve been dancing a little longer.
It is a partner dance so it’s preferable (but not essential) to visit CEROC venues with a friend/partner. However, people are rotated so you get a chance to dance with each other and make new friends aswell.
The really good thing about CEROC is that unlike other types of dance, it can be danced to just about any kind of music – rock, pop, swing, latin etc.
It’s been said that CEROC is a people’s dance rather than a dancer’s dance, so it means anyone can get on the dance floor – even if they have two left feet!
Dance nights are every Tuesday at Kimrick Bar & Restaurant, so if you fancy doing something a bit different, want to meet new people, have fun and get plenty of exercise aswell, why not go along and give it a go.
